Bourgogne Rouge, Les Champs de L'Abbaye, Alain
Hasard
Situated south of the Côte de Beaune, the vines
are planted on clay-chalk soils on south-facing slopes. Vines were planted here
back in the 13th century. Alain Hasard planted young Pinot Noir vines at 12,500
vines per hectare with grass in-between to aid biodiversity. There are six
hectares altogether and they have been certified organic since 1999 and follow
biodynamic priniciples. The pickers only pick the ripest, healthiest grapes and
fermentation takes its course depending on the weather conditions at vintage
time. Maceration takes around 6 to 10 days, enough to get the best expression
of Pinot Noir fruit whilst preserving finesse and elegance. The percentage of
new oak used is quite high and bottling is done without any fining or
filtration. This is very natural wine!
Tasting Note This is
quite a heavy-weight Pinot Noir, rich and quite masculine in style which will
improve with age (drink from 2009-2012). Lovely subtle, delicate nose of smoke
and spices. In the mouth the acidity blends with the intense fruit flavours
with a light and silky texture. Concentrated and very good length. It would
benefit from decanting for an hour or two before enjoying.
